Local Involvement

Food Bank Donations

The temple donates thousands of pounds of vegetables, fruits, oil and rice to the local Food Banks every year. Over the past decade, a variety of foods have been sent to the Richmond Food Bank, the Surrey Food Bank and the Salvation Army.

Emancipation of Lives Program

Every year, the Venerable frees tens of thousands of lives (which include birds and sea animals), locally and abroad. He does so with a group of volunteers, and personally verifies that the animals are healthy before they are taken out to sea for emancipation. After a Buddhist ceremony, the creatures are carefully and systematically released into the appropriate environment by the abbot and volunteers. Some examples of sea life that have been released are: Sole, Bull Head, Rock Cod, Tommy Cod, Clams, Oysters, Prawns and Crab. In fact, more than 100,000 pounds of sea animals have been freed thus far.

Join us in helping to emancipate sea life every year. For more information on how you can contribute, please visit our Support Us section. If you would like to participate either locally or abroad, please contact us at at 604-274-2822. A temple representative will be happy to assist you.

Charity Programs

Not only is the Buddhist Temple a devoted sponsor of the local community of Greater Vancouver through its many charitable programs, but also it has consistently participated in causes outside of Canada, directing its support and assistance to other societies overseas. Each year, Ven. Guan Cheng travels to China, recognizing that situations abroad affect us all. Intending to uphold the Buddhist virtue of compassion for all sentient beings, the Venerable consistently donates resources to the young and the elderly in the most rural and disadvantaged parts of Southern China. Overseas visits to these and other international communities for the purposes of providing humanitarian aid and introducing the Buddhist philosophy will be an ongoing initiative here at the International Buddhist Temple.

If you are interested in helping us with these causes in any way, please visit our Support Us section or contact temple personnel at 604-274-2822.
